Cardiologist Links Asthma to Heart Health: Dr. Anshul Kumar Jain Explains

Asthma, a chronic condition known for its impact on the airways, making breathing challenging, may have implications that go beyond respiratory issues. Cardiologist Dr. Anshul Kumar Jain highlights emerging research indicating a potential link between asthma and a higher risk of cardiovascular diseases. Dr. Jain emphasizes the importance of understanding this connection to effectively manage both respiratory and overall health.

Dr. Jain explains that while asthma itself does not directly cause heart disease, the chronic inflammation associated with asthma could contribute to systemic inflammation, including in the blood vessels. Over time, this persistent inflammation might elevate the risk of cardiovascular complications. Additionally, severe asthma attacks can temporarily lower oxygen levels in the blood, potentially straining the heart, particularly in those with existing cardiac conditions.

However, not every individual with asthma faces the same risk for heart-related issues. According to Dr. Jain, certain groups are more susceptible, including older adults with asthma, people with poorly controlled or severe asthma, and individuals who frequently experience asthma attacks. Smokers, those exposed to second-hand smoke, and people with other risk factors like high blood pressure, diabetes, obesity, or high cholesterol are also at greater risk. These factors can further increase the likelihood of developing cardiovascular disease.

Effective management of asthma can play a crucial role in supporting heart health as well. Dr. Jain advises that regularly taking prescribed asthma medications can help control airway inflammation and reduce the frequency of asthma exacerbations, thereby potentially mitigating the associated cardiovascular risks.
