The potential for a transformative free trade agreement with India was hailed as a “game changer” by Mark Carney during discussions with India’s commerce minister Piyush Goyal in Ottawa. The talks centered on the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA), with both parties optimistic about securing a deal by the end of the year. Carney highlighted the significant opportunities the agreement could unlock for Canadian workers and businesses, particularly in energy, agriculture, technology, and education sectors.
Piyush Goyal, conveying greetings from Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, emphasized the focus on strengthening long-term bilateral cooperation and expediting trade negotiations. Canada’s international trade minister Maninder Sidhu also participated in the discussions, where it was confirmed that two rounds of negotiations have already taken place, and that Canada will host the next round.
Goyal’s visit to Canada is accompanied by a major business delegation from India, comprising over 100 business representatives. These delegates are set to engage in trade and investment discussions in Toronto, marking a significant step in advancing economic ties between the two nations.
During his visit, Goyal also held meetings with Canadian foreign minister Anita Anand and agriculture minister Heath MacDonald, aiming to deepen cooperation across multiple sectors. This renewed momentum in diplomatic relations signifies a notable improvement following the tensions in 2023 over allegations concerning the killing of Khalistan figure Hardeep Singh Nijjar in Canada, accusations that India had firmly rejected.
The diplomatic climate between India and Canada has been on the mend since Carney assumed office in 2025, leading to a revival of diplomatic engagement and the relaunch of CEPA negotiations. This progress reflects a mutual commitment to overcoming past discord and fostering a more collaborative future.
