Vietnam and Australia’s Australian Capital Territory (ACT) are set to bolster ties, particularly between their capital cities. This development follows discussions between Vietnamese Ambassador Phạm Hùng Tâm and ACT Chief Minister Andrew Barr. The dialogue emphasized expanding cooperation among Hà Nội, Ho Chi Minh City, and Canberra, aiming to explore potential collaborations in key sectors.
Ambassador Tâm expressed optimism regarding Barr’s forthcoming visit to Hà Nội and Ho Chi Minh City, suggesting it could unlock new collaborative opportunities. He pointed out the promising areas for partnership, including renewable energy, innovation, education, tourism, and smart urban development. The ambassador also recommended a formal friendship and cooperation agreement between Hà Nội and the ACT to facilitate sustained cooperation across various sectors.
Chief Minister Barr, preparing for his inaugural trip to Vietnam, acknowledged the country as a significant economic partner for the ACT within its international engagement strategy. He welcomed the idea of establishing a sister-city relationship with Hà Nội and highlighted the potential for joint efforts in green transition, electric transport, and renewable energy projects. These initiatives align with the goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.
In addition, Barr expressed his readiness to engage in public diplomacy activities during visits to Australia by high-level Vietnamese officials, underscoring a commitment to deepening bilateral ties. This mutual interest in strengthening cooperation signals a promising phase of collaboration between Vietnam and the ACT, with both parties recognizing the benefits of shared initiatives for sustainable development.
