China has taken action against certain New Zealand parliamentarians by imposing entry bans following their visit to Taiwan, a move that has drawn Beijing’s disapproval. These lawmakers, visiting Taiwan in their official capacity, engaged with local political figures, which China claims has sent an incorrect message to pro-independence factions within Taiwan.

The Chinese Embassy in New Zealand expressed that these visits and subsequent public statements have adversely affected political dynamics, violating the one-China principle that China deems foundational to its diplomatic ties with New Zealand. Beijing has criticized the lawmakers for what it perceives as meddling in China’s internal matters.

Firm in its opposition to visits by lawmakers from countries maintaining official diplomatic relations with China, Beijing warned against such actions, particularly regarding Taiwan. The embassy emphasized that those challenging China’s core interests, especially concerning Taiwan, would face repercussions.

In its response, China reiterated the importance of respecting its sovereignty and territorial integrity, urging all parties involved to adhere to the one-China principle. The issue of Taiwan remains a highly sensitive topic in China’s foreign affairs, underscoring the diplomatic tensions such visits incite.
